Product identifier
A product identifier is the name or number used for a hazardous chemical on its label and safety data sheet. It can be a chemical name, common name, trade name, code, or batch number, but it must match between the label and the SDS.
Explanation
The product identifier is the first label element and the main link between a container and its paperwork. If the label says one thing and the sheet says another, a worker cannot be sure the sheet applies.
Suppliers choose what to use. A single-ingredient product may carry its chemical name, while a branded cleaner may carry a trade name or a code. Either approach is acceptable, as long as the same identifier appears on both the label and in Section 1 of the SDS.
For a Substance, identifiers often include the CAS number or a synonym. For a Mixture, the trade name usually carries it, with components listed on the SDS in the composition section.
Inside the workplace, the identifier is what ties your chemical inventory, your SDS collection, and your workplace labels together. Many inspection findings come from containers whose identifier cannot be matched to any sheet.
When you decant a product into another container, copy the identifier exactly, using a secondary container label so the link stays unbroken.
What to do and watch for
- Match every label to an SDS by identifier before using a new container.
- Copy the identifier exactly when relabeling a transfer container.
- Keep your inventory list using the same names as the SDSs.
Where it appears on an SDS
- Section 1: Identification. The sheet repeats the product identifier exactly as it appears on the label and may list other names or codes.
- Section 3: Composition / information on ingredients. For mixtures, the composition section lists the ingredient names that sit behind the product identifier.
SDS content and wording vary by supplier. This page is general reference and does not replace the current SDS for your product.
