Synonym (chemical name)
A synonym is an alternate name for the same chemical substance, such as a common name, trade name, abbreviation, or older systematic name. Synonyms help workers and databases recognize that differently named products can contain the same material.
Explanation
Chemistry has many naming conventions. The same compound might have a formal name from systematic rules, a shorter common name that workers actually use, and trade names that manufacturers give it. A solvent known by one name on a drum may appear under a different name in a regulation.
That is why SDSs often list synonyms in Section 1 or 3. They give you more ways to cross-check a sheet against a label, an inventory entry, or a regulatory list. If your search for a name fails, trying a synonym often finds the record.
Synonyms are risky if you rely on them alone. Two similar names can belong to different chemicals, such as members of a family that differ by one group, and a trade name may refer to a mixture rather than a pure substance. Names can also change between countries.
The more reliable check is the CAS number, which points to one Substance. Use synonyms to find candidates, then confirm with the number. The product identifier on the label should still match the one on the SDS.
In an emergency, a synonym can save time if the container shows a name that differs from the one in your records.
What to do and watch for
- Record common synonyms in your chemical inventory so staff can find sheets under the name they use.
- Confirm identity with the CAS number before acting on a synonym match.
- Be careful with names that differ by only a prefix or number.
Where it appears on an SDS
- Section 1: Identification. Alternate names, trade names, and codes for the product are often listed with the product identifier.
- Section 3: Composition / information on ingredients. Ingredient entries may list synonyms alongside the chemical name and CAS number.
