Every hazardous chemical label uses one or more of these red-bordered diamonds. Select one to see what it means and which chemicals carry it.
What's in a safety data sheet?
Every SDS follows the same 16-section order set by the UN GHS and OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, so the answer you need is always in the same place: gloves and respirators in Section 8, first aid in Section 4, flash point in Section 9.

Frequently asked questions
What is an SDS?
A safety data sheet (SDS) is a standardized 16-section document that a chemical's manufacturer, importer or distributor must provide. It describes the chemical's hazards, safe handling and storage, required PPE, first aid, fire-fighting, spill response, physical properties, toxicology, disposal and transport information.
How do I look up the SDS for a chemical?
Search by chemical name, synonym or CAS number on SDS Lookup to get a 16-section safety summary for the pure substance. For the official SDS of a specific product, use the one supplied with the product or request it from the manufacturer or distributor — they are required to provide it.
Is an SDS the same as an MSDS?
An SDS replaced the older MSDS (material safety data sheet). Under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, aligned with the UN GHS, SDSs follow a fixed 16-section order with standardized hazard classes, signal words, pictograms and hazard statements, while MSDS formats varied.
Can AI read my safety data sheet?
Yes. The free SDS Analyzer reads an uploaded SDS (PDF or photo) and returns a plain-English summary of the hazards, PPE, first aid and storage requirements, with every hazard code checked against the official GHS text. Uploads are not stored. Always confirm against the original document.
