Glossary / Controls & PPE
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is clothing and gear worn by a worker to reduce exposure to hazards such as chemicals. It includes gloves, eye and face protection, respirators, aprons and boots, and it is chosen using the hazard information on the SDS.
Explanation
PPE is the last line of defense, not the first. In the Hierarchy of controls, elimination, substitution and Engineering controls come before PPE because they remove or reduce the hazard at its source, while PPE relies on the wearer using the right equipment correctly every time. Where hazards remain, PPE is still essential.
Choosing PPE starts with the SDS. Section 8 recommends protection, and the hazards in Sections 2, 9 and 11 explain why. A splash hazard points to Chemical splash goggles, a skin hazard to Chemical-resistant gloves, and an airborne hazard may require a Respirator. Workplace rules expect employers to assess hazards, select suitable equipment, train workers and make sure the gear fits.
No single item protects against every chemical. A glove that works well for one solvent may fail quickly with another, and a dust mask is not a substitute for a chemical respirator. Manufacturers' selection charts and test data on Breakthrough time help match equipment to a task.
PPE must also be maintained. Damaged items should be replaced, reusable items cleaned and stored properly, and contaminated gear removed in a way that avoids spreading the chemical. The idea of Decontamination applies to PPE as well as people.
What to do and watch for
- Use the SDS and your hazard assessment to choose, not habit.
- Check fit and condition before each use.
- Treat PPE as a backup to ventilation and safe process design.
Where it appears on an SDS
- Section 8: Exposure controls / personal protection. Recommends specific PPE such as glove material, eye protection and respirator type for the product.
- Section 7: Handling and storage. Gives handling precautions that explain when PPE must be worn.
SDS content and wording vary by supplier. This page is general reference and does not replace the current SDS for your product.
