DOT Division 1.2: Projection Hazard

Division 1.2 is the DOT explosives division for materials that have a projection hazard but not a mass explosion hazard. If one item functions, it can throw fragments or objects some distance, but the whole load does not explode at once.

How it is defined

  • The main danger is flying fragments, burning pieces or unexploded items thrown from the site.
  • Items may explode individually or in small groups as they are heated or involved in a fire.
  • Responders keep a larger distance from a Division 1.2 load than from a typical 1.4 load because of the projection risk.

Summary of 49 CFR Parts 171 to 180. The regulations and the Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR 172.101) control any shipment.

Common examples

  • Certain ammunition and projectiles with explosive filling
  • Some rocket motors and warheads
  • Some bursting charges

How it relates to GHS

Corresponds to a GHS explosives division with a projection hazard. Pictogram GHS01 with the signal word Danger.

DOT classes and GHS classes are assigned under different rules, so a product can have different severity labels in each. See also all GHS hazard classes.

Safe handling reminders

  • Handle only with proper training, packaging and approvals.
  • Segregate from other classes as the segregation table requires.
  • In a fire, evacuate and follow emergency guidance because items can be projected.

Where to find it on an SDS

Section 14 will list Class 1, Division 1.2 and its compatibility group and UN number. Look in Section 14: Transport information. Hazard classification for the workplace is in Section 2. You can also see how a UN number points to a response guide on the UN and NA numbers page.
